Gucci Brand History 

Founded in 1921, Gucci is one of the oldest Italian fashion brands in operation today. What started out as a luggage manufacturer is now a global luxury brand worth over $13 billion. 

But things haven’t always been rosy for Gucci. In addition to family drama and a tax evasion scandal, Gucci has often been forced to innovate in response to materials shortages. 

For example, both its bamboo-handled bags and its signature hemp canvas came as the result of post-World War II leather shortages. 

Luckily, the brand has once again found its footing and nowadays continues to create clothing and leather goods that appeal to the well-heeled. 

Gucci Aphrodite Bag History 

Although Gucci introduced Aphrodite as part of its 2023 Cosmogonie Cruise collection, the bag is an ode to the brand’s past. Indeed, the design was inspired by a House code dating back to the 1970s. 

More specifically, Aphrodite’s bold interlocking double G logo speaks to the brand’s maximalist aesthetic of years gone by.

While certain design elements harken back to the past, the color palate, adjustable shoulder strap, and elegant shape give Aphrodite a modern feel. 

All in all, Aphrodite has the signature whimsy of Gucci’s Creative Director Alessandro Michele written all over it. 

Unfortunately, Michele announced his departure from the Italian House soon after Aphrodite was released however, it’s likely that this bag will serve as an ode to the well-loved designer for years to come. 

Gucci Aphrodite Bag Description 

Gucci’s Aphrodite is a crescent-shaped, hobo-style shoulder bag with clean, curvy lines and simple accents. 

It can be worn on the shoulder or across the body by attaching the longer strap that comes included. 

The small size has a zipper closure, while the medium and large sizes feature a magnetic flap closure. 

Inside, there’s a single zippered compartment and a large open compartment.

Gucci Aphrodite Materials 

Aphrodite’s body is made out of either soft calf leather or cotton canvas accented with leather. 

The hardware is a shiny gold-toned variety. Inside, the bag is lined with moiré, a textile with a wavy, watered appearance.  

Colors

Like many of Gucci’s bags, the Aphrodite comes in neutral shades like black, brown, and white, as well as brighter colors like hibiscus red, kelly green, purple, and bubblegum pink.
