The Saint Laurent Mombasa Bag Returns

Guess who’s back? The Mombasa bag is having a moment

One of Saint Laurent’s most recognizable early-2000s handbags is making a comeback. The Mombasa, originally introduced during Tom Ford’s time at the house, first appeared in the Spring–Summer 2002 collectsion and quickly became one of the brand’s most talked-about accessories.

More than twenty years later, Saint Laurent has reintroduced the silhouette with subtle updates while preserving the details that made it distinctive.

A Defining Design from the Early 2000s

The original Mombasa featured a relaxed hobo shape with a curved silhouette and soft structure. Its most memorable detail was the sculptural handle made from natural deer horn or metal crafted to resemble horn.

Tom Ford treated the handle as a central design feature. In some boutiques customers were able to choose the horn handle used on their bag, which meant no two pieces looked exactly the same. The design quickly became associated with the luxury fashion scene of the early 2000s and helped strengthen Saint Laurent’s accessories line during that period.

The 2026 Reissue

The newly released version stays close to the archival design while adapting certain elements. The most noticeable change appears in the handle. Instead of real horn, the updated model features a leather-wrapped structure that echoes the original horn shape.

Bronze-tone hardware engraved with the YSL logo connects the handle to the body of the bag. The main body still follows the same curved seam construction that creates the recognizable crescent shape. Saint Laurent has updated the leather to padded calfskin, which gives the bag a fuller and softer appearance.

Sizes and Carrying Style

The reintroduced Mombasa comes in three sizes:

Small
A compact version intended for daily essentials and typically carried by hand or on the forearm.

Medium
Includes an interior zip pocket and works comfortably as a shoulder bag.

Large
Provides more storage space and features a longer shoulder drop for easier everyday wear.

The medium and large versions sit naturally on the shoulder and can be worn over coats or thicker clothing.

Materials and Price Range

Saint Laurent offers the bag in several finishes, including padded calfskin, vintage-style calfskin, and pony hair. A small version is also available in alligator leather.

Approximate pricing for the current models includes:

• Small calfskin version around $3,450
• Medium versions roughly $4,300 to $4,500 depending on material
• Large versions starting around $5,600
• Small alligator version priced around $25,000

A Revival of an Archive Icon

The return of the Mombasa reflects the continued interest in archive pieces from the early 2000s. Luxury houses have increasingly revisited designs from that era, bringing back silhouettes that once defined the “It bag” moment in fashion.

With the Mombasa’s distinctive handle and curved shape preserved, Saint Laurent reconnects with an important chapter in its accessory history while presenting the design to a new generation of buyers.
