Scammers have been known to impersonate organisations like the Australian Tax Office (ATO), the Australian Federal Police, or state police. They often make threatening calls and demand payment through gift cards, something no legitimate authority will ever ask you to do.
Here are some clear signs of a scam:
- You’re threatened with arrest
- You’re asked for immediate payment, especially via bitcoin, pre-paid credit cards, or gift cards
- You’re told not to speak with a trusted advisor or tax agent
- The caller ID looks suspicious or shows a fake number
If someone contacts you claiming to be from the ATO or police and asks you to buy gift cards, it’s best to hang up straight away.
You can always check with the relevant authority directly if you’re unsure.
